The Segmentation of the Academic Labour Market and Gender, Field, and Institutional Inequalities

Using data from a 2017 survey of Czech academics this article examines the casualisation working conditions in academic labour market (ALM) and explores gender, sectoral, institutional inequalities through lens theory segmentation. A hierarchical cluster analysis reveals three segments ALM: core (40%), periphery (28%), semi‐periphery (32%), which roughly align with work positions early, middle, senior stages an career. In gender is found to be key factor determining conditions, while are most affected by type institution. core, differences mainly reflected wage gap. The effects on more pronounced STEM fields than social sciences humanities across ALM, but wages generally higher fields.
